xp won't boot

Hi
I uninstalled Norton anti virus (last definitions update was Aug 2004) from
a pc and now the pc will not boot normally, safe mode or last known good.
After the initial windows screen it starts checking the hard drive for
inconsistencies which goes to around 76% then tries to re-boot. I’ve tried
cancelling the disk check but it seems to freeze. When I uninstalled Norton I
got an option to delete quarantined items but I’m now thinking that by
uninstalling Norton I have unleashed untold havoc on the pc.
I would be very grateful if anyone could help

I removed all unnecessary hardware and it finished the scan disk and booted
normally.
