help removing xp sp2

Running XP Pro SP2

I cannot remove XP SP2 and I don't know why. Here is what happens:

I double click the spunist.exe in the SP2 removal folder.

The Removal Wizard starts and goes completely through these steps:
-Inspecting Current Configuration
-Checking For Necessary Space
-Stopping Services
-Restoring Catalogs
-Running Processes Before Uninstalling

When it finishes that, I get an error window with a red circle with a white
X in it saying "The System Cannot Find The File Specified", I Okay that out
and another window opens, same look, saying "The Service Pack 2 Was Not
Uninstalled" with an Okay out also, and that is the end of it all, nothing
else happens.

Is it possible that I have a service turned off that should be running to
accomplsh the removal?

I tried reinstalling SP2 to see if that would help. The only download I
could find, 272MB, to do that was here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

When I tried to install it after downloading it it would not install over
the one installed.

I used the MS Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875350

They offer four options there. I did not have SP2 entered in Add/Remove
Programs. . . .I explained what happens when I use the spunist.exe. . .
..and I did not have "Restore Point" activated, so that was out.

The last one, "Recovery Console", is way over my head and I didn't even
want to dare and attempt that one.

So, is anyone familiar with the problem I am having? If so, what method can
I use to finally remove XP SP2?

Would it be as simple as I thought by having a "service" disabled?

Thanks in advance for any replies!!!!

Well the obvious question is- why do you want to remove it? If you prep your
system properly it doesn't cause any problems.

welll depending on how long you have has sp2 you could always to go start all
programs then accessories then go to system tools then go to system restore
and set the date back to before u installed service pack 2

Thanks for the replies. Here is an update (weird)

I got up enough nerve to use the Recover Console methode. I printed out the
instructioand followed them to a T. SP2 was removed, according to all the
procedures but:

when I look at the properties of my computer it still says service pack 2.
When I rebooted in safe mode it still lists the OS as SP2. All the context
items are removed from IE that came with SP2.

When I used windows update it does NOT show that I need SP2. If it was
removed shouldn't it offer it to me?

This is really weird now.
