I originally installed SP1 and was current on all XP
updates, etc.. but I was having problems with Windows
Explorer crashing at regular intervals - so as suggested
in another NG I ran "SFC /Scannow" to repair damaged
system files.

The problem is I used my original XP Pro disc to repair
the files as I thought I could just reinstall any
necessary updates later. I now learn that I should have
created a new cd rom including the sp1 updates before
running Scannow as I've (apparently) restored old
versions of the system files.

What do I do now? I can't download sp1 or sp1a because
the update site believes that I'm up to date on
everything even though I have older versions of system
files installed.

Any suggestions... I would prefer to not have to do a
complete install from scratch.

Thanx in advance.

That 'learning' was not actually correct. Installing SP1 should have
made a folder windows\ServicePackFiles containing all the SP1 versions,
to use in preference, and put an entry in registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
called ServicePackSourcePath to point to it.

So before going any further check to see if those are present: if they
are SFC should have used them. You only need a 'slipstreamed' disk if
you do a complete 'repair' reinstall (or have SP1 around on a CD so as
to run it immediately after
