Help!! Print Queue fills up with SPL & SHD files

Brian Jorgenson

I have a Windows 2K SP4 server used as a print server. Everytime
somebody prints through it, it leaves behind temp SPL and SHD files.
We can print through it just fine but the queue fills up fast with
thousands of these files. My orginal queue had 64,325 files when my
server finally crashed. I created a new queue folder and the same
thing keeps happening. What is going on here?

Hi There,

- This behaviour can arise from having an antivirus program actively
scanning the spooler folder. If the files therein are being scanned, then
the spooler will be unable to delete them. This will cause the build-up of
files you are experiencing.
- Also, there is a setting on the "Advanced" tab of the printer properties
that keeps all print job files: "Keep printed documents". Ensure that this
checkbox is cleared
