Uncle Vinnie

Hi, using XP Home...

I am almost certain I will need to do a repair on daughter's pc.. one of the
more malicious spyware programs wreaked havoc- so much so it took Webroot's
SpySweeper Tech support to get rid of it - finally, I hope.

Meantime, the issue we are having is with what I would call finalization...

Download a program, it sits at 99%. Same with installing or uninstalling
programs. I was unable to format a disk or even an iPod (as a drive)-
Apples' software, same problem....

With this, my thinking is to use the CD for a repair - I have never done
this before.. so I could certainly use a little advice here.. do's, don'ts,
etc.. especially since I am not exactly certain what is wrong with Windows..
last resort w/b a reinstall.. I really don't want to go through all that!

Thanks!

If I had your problem, I would do a clean reinstallation of XP which will
format the hard drive and wipe out everything on it. I would also update all
drivers after reinstallation. You can get a walkthrough at Microsoft, the web
site of the pc mfg. or by Googling the words "clean reinstallation XP". I
know it's a pain to do it and reinstall all the programs, and save all your
impt. files etc, but it's probably the better way for you. Of course you'll
then have to get all the updates from MS also. Good luck.

Thanks! I agree 1,000%... I've done an install, matter of fact, I installed
it on this pc a year or 2 ago.. it is a pain to install, get all the
drivers, updates, reinstall Office, get those updates... I'd almost rather
buy a new PC, they're cheap enough!

I was hoping and praying the 'repair' might do the trick... odds are, it
won't - I'd almost bet... but one never knows!

Vinnie,

I did a clean install of Windows XP home just last week. In trying to remove
annoying software like McAfee Virusscan and some other unneeded stuff through
Windows "Add/Remove Programs", it deleted some needed files used by Internet
Explorer which could not even start, so I decided to reinstall.

It takes about an hour to install from original CD. It takes another hour+
to download all microsoft patches at 500Kbits/sec coonection. After the clean
install, don't forget to save and mark a Recovery point. Do start, Help &
Support, Recovery
so infuture, you don't have to do this again.

Hope this helps. You can do all this while watching TV or doing other chores
since there is little interaction most of the time.

Jay
