I have an Acer Travelmate 340 which does not have a floppy or cd drive. I
was not able to boot the machine until I installed some ram. It know boots
up, however I cannot get into bios. The computer starts up and gets to the
lassword prompt. It then has window that states it has found New Hardware,
and is installing the software, but the machine never can past this. Can I
connect my Compaq 2100 to this Acer, and if yes, how can that help get the
Fat 32 system to run properly? Or does anyone have any ideas? thx. fc...

Is this XP Home or Pro?
How was XP originally installed on this system?
Do you have an XP CD that was installed on this system?
Has this system ever properly booted up in Normal Mode?

If any such are connected, disconnect any peripherals such
as printers, scanners, cameras, etc.

Restart the computer and repeatedly tap on the F8 key as it is
booting up - this is to try to get to the Advanced Options Menu -

If the AOM did come up, highlight just plain Safe Mode and press
Enter - you may have to press Enter again for XP -

Logon as Administrator

Are you able to successfully load the Safe Mode desktop?

If so, did a Found New Hardware wizard come up?
If so, does it indicate what device is trying to install?

Please post back.

I am so sorry that it has been this long to reply, as my isp went down and i
have been working. The OS is 98SE. I was able to boot up in safe mode and
as administrator, I also was able to use a backup program that was on the
machine, and had it back, however I was still denied access to the bios. I
shut down the machine. Upon reboot, I now have a black screen with a
blinking cursor. There is no cd, or floppy drive, only phone, ethernet jack,
printer, serial connector, s-jack. again sorry for the delay in responding,
thx-fc...
