I have a machine that is freezing on Windows startup. It
gets half way through starting up and then freezes. The
user reported that they went out to MS and downloaded
updates (Critical, Driver, and OS) shortly before this
happened.

I have done the following:

Booted in Safe Mode without issue. - success
Booted into "Last Known Good Configuration" - failed
Stripped startup items from registry - failed
Uninstalled recent MS update (SP5 Q818043) - failed
Uninstalled Windows Media update - failed
Attempting 2000 repair using CD - failed

I am thinking this is a driver issue since no new devices
were installed.

Is there a way to blow out all the OEM drivers on the
machine and let Windows redetect the devices and install
Windows drivers?

How can you restore the OS (W2K) to it's original
configuration with deleting or overwriting any user data?

Thanks for your help and ideas.

If the MS04-011 was installed (Q835732) then here is the fix:
KB article 841382: "Your Windows 2000-based computer stops responding, you
cannot log on to Windows, or your CPU usage for the System process
approaches 100 percent "
