HELP PLEASE!!! XP crashes restarts randomly

Hi,

Windows XP crashes randomly. It does not matter what application I am
running, playing games (especially when saving or loading new scene),
without any warning it just blinks off and restarts. I do not get
any error messages, no STOP signs, nothing is logged in the Event Viewer
when I go there to check if anything has been logged.
I check device Manager and all devices are fine, none of them are reported
to have any issues, no device conflicts.

Here is the spc of my Machine:

OS= Windows XP Pro w/SP2 (all patches installed)
CPU= Athlon XP 2600
RAM= 512MB PC2100
Motherboard: Gigabyte 7VAXP Ultra
Video Card: ATI 128MB Radeon 9600XT (latest video card driver)
HD: Primary 20GB (boot & sys drive)
HD: Secondary 80GB

I have re-installed XP hoping it might be corrupted OS, but new XP OS
randomly crashes, blinks off and restarts.
I do not even have any dump file created no folder C:\windows\minidump exists.
Dr. Watson can't even intercepts this crash, although I do have the user.dmp
file created in the all users\microsoft\drwatson folder.

Any suggestion, how I should approach this proplem, it would have been so
much easier if something is logged when the system crashes. Any
tools/utilites I could run?

Thanks
Ahmed

Ahmed:

I would think the first thing would be a virus check - several of them lead
to the symptoms you are reporting.

After that check on environmental problems (excessively low humidity, for
example, is often a problem in the winter).. Has the location of the system
been changed recently?

Finally, I would check for hardware problems. If your hard disk is in the
process of failing, or your CPU overheating due, for example, to a failure
of the cooling system, this could also lead to random booting.

You don't list a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). That's the 1st
thing I would do, get to the store and buy one. Even if glitches in
power is not causing the problem, it'll still save your equipment when
you have power surges and let you save and shut down in a power
failure. Some computers are so sensitive to power changes they react
when you can't see a flicker in the light.

Hi Guys,

I do not think I have any virus infection on my computer. I have Norton
Internet Security 2005. Virus & firewall Defs are all fully up to date. I
run regular scans of my pc...no infections.

As far as location of PC is concerned, its located in the basement and I
have to admit it can get cold and damp. Random crashes have been a regular
problems with this pc, ever since I built it. Lately, I have decided no
more...I want to resolve this issue once and for all. The pc has always been
in the basement where I live.

As far as hardware is concerned, I have the most up to date BIOS for
motherboard, CPU does not overheat, its always runs within normal temp range
otherwise motherboard has been configured to switch the pc off.

As far as HD's go, primary master hard drive is the old Maxtor IDE 20GB
(boot & sys drive) and the new Maxtor 80GB ATA133 primary slave drive. The
primary master drive is auto set to Ultra DMA Mode 4 and the primary slave is
auto set to Ultra DMA mode 6.

How do I check HD is in process of failing, any utilities avaliable? or do I
run a surface scan.

Terry you wrote:

Do you mean, plug the primary hd into the power supply with the most cords?

Tom regarding your suggestion:

I do not have a UPS, just to take this out of the equation, I will go buy a
UPS and try to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks guys for your suggestions,

Ahmed
