Help, please, with avi files

Help, please....

We have some AVI files that played under XP Home, but no longer under Vista
Home Premium. I've read some threads that indicate Media Player needs
'codecs'.. I've downloaded some, but have no idea what to do with them!

Help, thanks!

Download K-Lite Codec Pack, install, select "Lots of stuff" which will
install all known codecs or leave it typical, your choice. Restart if
it requests so and then try your AVI.

Wow, thank you for the fast reply...

I did download it, but then went to uninstall it as my AV came up saying it
wanted to install some Registry Cleaner...spyware...

Did I download the 'bloated' version of K-lite? Also, I was unable to
actually find the program itself...

You have to be careful where you download these codec packs. Look for the
official site.

Use VLC media player, which plays a lot of video files, or
use GSpot to tell you what codecs the AVI files require, and install
those specific codecs.

GSpot never returns information about .mp4 files. am i missing
something?
