AVI Files

Is there a fix for the fact that I cannot play standard *.avi files in Media
player under VISTA?

They work like a gem on XP..

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

"Standard" and .avi are two words that probably don't belong together.

Chances are the files are using a codec that you downloaded at some time
when using XP that you haven't yet loaded in Vista.

There is a little utility called gspot
(http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpot.htm) that will tell you what
codec you are missing but not necessarily how or where to get it. Also
available on that same site are links to several codec packages which may or
may not work with Vista so be mindful.

I bet the "AVI" files are actually divX files. The AVI file spec is
actually a wrapper. Anything can be inside. You should be able to play
divX files with a seperate player.

Download and install GSpot, then open one if your problem AVI files in
it and it will show you what is actually inside and what codecs
already on your system should be able to play it.

When you tried to play the file it would have offered more help, and web
help. Somewhere along that help MAY be a 4 digit code. If you can get that
code you can find the right codec.
