Finally heard from the Coyote people. Not very helpful. They saw nothing
wrong with the HJT log, but said that doesn't necessarily mean anything
since bad stuff can often escape detection. They also think I should
uninstall my Canon MP530 to see if the spyware scans complete without
causing the Page Fault shut down. Assuming that uninstalling the printer
cures the problem, I wanted to know if reinstalling the machine would cause
the problem to recur, but they didn't answer my question.

No one seems to know why spyware scans shut down my computer. It appears to
be a driver problem, most likely from the new multifunction printer and not
spyware or malware. The message I get after rebooting from a shut down which
says the computer has recovered from a serious problem also leads me to the
following Microsoft Windows Error Reporting screen:
http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/...SGD=bc6fc0b2-a9fe-47df-9b5b-fe92ea338477#here

I downloaded and ran the Dell Driver Reset Tool.......it found no problems.
I DON'T want to uninstall my printer unless it's absolutely necessary.
Everything is working fine, computer and printer. The ONLY problem is
running a spyware scan. Virus scans run through without any problems. My
computer is protected from spyware and viruses, I just can't scan for
spyware. I keep getting update messages from AVG that indicate my computer
is protected against viruses and spyware. Actually, if the computer is
protected, why is it necessary to scan at all?

What do you guys think? Is it worth getting to the root of this or just
forget about it? Reminder: my computer just passed its 4th birthday, so
we're talking about maybe another year at the most before a replacement
becomes necessary.

Hi,
Try to remove these from the startup:
Open a run command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK]
[-] HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\RUN =
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\WrtMon.exe
%systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Note removing these items it doesn't mean uninstalling the software/drivers
for them, it mean just take them of from the startUp programs Option.
Run a Disk Cleanup and Defrag in Safe mode.
Then Open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need XP CD for this procedure.
By the way you need a firewall with AVG as it comes ( the free version)
without a Firewall, unless you gone for the Full/Commercial Version, there is
a Zone Alarm Firewall, Comdo, Kerio free Firewall.

It will not Hurt uninstalling the Software for the Printer, is there is no
neighbour have the knowledge to help out for uninstalling the Printer.
Try this Click Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs, locate the
Printer Software ( it will may be more than one) and Click Remove, remove all
software there for the Printer, then Turn Down your Machine.
Unplug the Printer from the Computer and Reboot the Machine, try the scan
for both malware and Viruses (Full Scan) and see if the issue will occur?,
does it occcur, if not then the printer driver was corrupt or you need to
download the latest Driver/Software for your Specific printer Serial Number
on Canon website.
When you try to reinstall the printer pay attention, there is a custom
install and there is a Typical Install, select custom install and check what
you want to install.

Again, in the back of my head something say a memory leak, but it only
happen with Anti-malware scan?.

What Anti-spyware wanting you to set as the HOME page?, you need to
configure this software to allow you to change at any time, so read the help
on how to configure the Protection Mode for that Software.

Are you sure your Event Viewer is logging Events to your system?, see the
service in the services Panel, by Click Start >> Run type in:
services.msc click [OK] and look for this service and make sure is
started Auto:
Error Reporting
Event Log
HTH.

Daave and Nass......

This is an interesting site (http://www.tasklist.org/tasklist_w.html) which
lists many invalid Task Manager processes. Except for one or two legitimate
processes that begin with "W", most are either unnecessary or originated
from a "bug". The reason I searched for a site that defines the different
TaskManager processes is because Wrtman.exe and Wrtproc.exe both appear in
the Processes list and I CANNOT END those two processes. If you recall, I
also could not delete them from the Windows\System32\Drivers\Spool\3 Folder.
I no longer doubt that those two files are the culprits and perhaps the
"dumprep/KernelFaultCheck" entry you mention as well.

Daave, by the way, there are NO updated drivers for the Canon MP530. That
was one of the first things I checked at the Canon site and the online Canon
tech confirmed that with me.

So, it appears your advice to uninstall the MP530 is probably the best
advice of all. Restoring the system to a point before the printer
installation would eliminate the faulty drivers (maybe), but it would also
render my printer unusable until I reinstalled the drivers. Therefore, I
might as well start with a clean slate. So, as soon as gather up my courage
(which seems to have gone missing at the moment), I will uninstall the MP530
and start from scratch.

Thank you both from the bottom of my heart for all your incredible
assistance. When (or if) I get this matter resolved, I will report back.
