My pc wont boot properly, it only get past the log on screen, then goes
blank, but task manager can be started and programs run.
Event viewer states

EVENT_BOOT_SYSTEM_DRIVERS_FAILED

and that i need to reinstall, but how do i do this? sorry a complete novice.
(microsoft help sent me here)

this virus was picked up before i booted by antivir

AntiVir has detected a virus 'Worm/Backterra.D' in the file C:\SYSTEM VOLUME
INFORMATION\_RESTORE{68DCCD3E-2073-4915-A5DC-A445A55876AD}\RP183\A0059133.EXE

The program was meant to wipe the virus, but now the computer wont start,
any help would be appreciated, but please simple instructions only, thanks

Here is a link which will walk you through a reinstall
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

As for thr virus it is in your system restore folders(Volume) once you can
boot your system up just shut off system restore reboot and turn it back on
againthis will delete the virus.
The virus in this folder will do you no harm "unless" you restore your
system back to the date where the virus is at.

antivir cannot touch the system volume information directory because its
protected--also meaning that the worm can't hurt you from in there--it
was included in a previous restore point before antivir got to it so
relax. simply turn off the system restore on all drives and boot up
again then turn it back on and boot up a second time--the worm will
simply disappear like magic, oh, wait, I forgot, you can't boot at
all...Hmmmm, reinstall the operating system. something else, probably
unrelated, has happened.
