Help - PC won't turn on.

My main home computer won't turn on. The motherboard light is on, and
the Ethernet light.

I was adding a new hard drive to the case (a new Samsung spinpoint
250GB IDE). It would be my third drive. I also have a further Samsung
250GB IDE and a Maxtor 200GB SATA drive (my OS is on the sata drive.)

The PC started fine, then as I was putting the side panel of the case
back on, my CPU cooler fan ran at full speed for about 2 seconds
(making a loud noise), then the whole system shut down without
warning.

I have left it to sit for around 30 mins now. I was wearing an anti-
static wrist strap for the work. What can I do now? =(

P.S. I changed my 12cm internal PSU fan for a quieter one last night.
But I was using my PC for a few hours after that, and had been using
it today as well.

have you left it fully off ie unplugged.

no chance you dislodged the cpu cooler while in there................sounds
like the cpu is overheating.

Um. Just to clarify, the PC had been off for more than an hour. The
CPU would have cooled down by now.

Um, just to clarify, when you switch on the cpu is straight into action and
will heat up instantaneously. Without a block to cool it, it shuts off
immediately.

remove the drive and run the way it was BEFORE you installed anything.

Or start with the bare minimums CPU VIDEO MEMORY(1 stick) and post if it can, then add the
single bootable HD

recheck all things related to the CPU as suggested, I suspect you bumped memory or
something while installing

It sounds likely that either your PSU or your motherboard have failed. It's
possible that your PSU was too underpowered to be able to handle an
additional harddrive load and self-destructed.

Problem solved.

Yes I did knock something apparently. It was the motherboard 24 pin
power cable. didn't occur to me to check it especially because I
hadn't removed it - I just looked at all connections without noticing
that the end 4 pins were loose. (It is split into a 20 pin and 4 pin
connectors.)
