Help! PC Keeps shutting down

Mr E

The PC keeps shutting down after only being on for a few moments. There is
a thermostat on the gigabyte motherboard which sits under the processor and
an artic heat sink & fan which was designed for the AMD 3000+ processor. The
PC has ran for 3 years with no problems but all of a sudden the processor
has started overheating causing the PC to shut down.

ANyone any ideas how I sort this???

PC No water cooling or extravagant cooling systems please, Im on a tight
budget

is the cpu cooler fan still turning ?
could just be dust bound ?
How do you know CPU is overheating? Could be duff PSU, try and borrow
one to test with.

Hi there, yea the heatsink and fan are free from dust and the fan is turning
freely, i have been monitoring the temperature in the bios setting and as
son as it gets up to 86 degrees celcious it makes 3 different tones and
shuts off, do you think I maybee just need to take the heatsink off and add
a new layer of conductor gel in between the processor and heatsink??

any advise would be most greatfull

Look at my reply below. I monitored the temp in the bios menu going up and
its a brand new 600w psu

Good brand or garbage? I don't really think the psu is the problem,
though. Try touching the heatsink when the temp starts to climb; I
can't help but wonder if a temp sensor hasn't gone wacky and your
board is trying to protect you from something that isn't really there.
Only way anything has likely changed with your heatsink installation
is if somebody has knocked it lose.

Then you most likely havent got the heatsink
mounted on the cpu properly anymore.

With it overheating so quickly, its more likely you havent
got the heatsink mounted properly. Most likely one of the
clips that holds it on the socket has come off or the stud
it clips onto on the socket has snapped off.

While in theory you might have seen deterioration of
cheap conductive paste between the heatsink and
cpu top, its overheating too quickly for that to be likely.
