Help! No Windows Startup/Shutdown "music"

Am I losing my mind or what??!! The usual XP "music" sounds when I switch
users on my PC, but there is nothing when I shut down the PC or start it up.
I checked in sound settings and the standard WindowsXP startup/shutdown
sounds are set and they test OK there.
What could be causing this?
