Help, no sound

My sound has stopped. The only sound i can get is a little beep from the
cpu. My speakers are connected but when I attempt to adjust the volume from
the control panel, the volume control is "grayed out" and I cannot select or
move the slider. Any ideas?

Start\Settings\Control Panel. Scroll to the speaker icon for “Sounds and
Audioâ€. Double click to open and make sure that the “Mute†selection box
does not have a check mark in it. If it does, then check “Place volume icon
in the taskbar†selection box. Next make sure that the witch is all the way
towards the right in the “High†position.
Next if you have one, select the “Advanced†button and make sure nothing in
the “Volume Control†window is selected to Mute and that all the switches are
set to full volume and that the balance is centered for all the switches.

Next: at the bottom of the screen, select the “Speaker Volume†button. In
that window, make sure that the left and right volume control switches are
moved all the way up to “High†as well.
Next to the Speaker Volume button there should be another Advance button.
Select that and then select the “Performance†tab and make sure that all
switches are in the “Full†and “Best†positions.
Back on the Properties window, go through the other tabs and make sure that
everything else looks fine as far as allowing for sound output to the
speakers.

Sorry Brian. I did not know that all of your options were grayed out. How
long have you had this problem? Did something change in your system that you
know of recently? Just checking.

I have the exact same problem as Brian. My speakers worked fine until I
moved, and now they don't speak to me. There is the little click when you
turn on the speakers, so they work. The diagnostics say the the sound device
is working, but like Brian, the volume area is gray, so I can't adjust it.
Under sound, the volume is high, but under volume, it is low. Nothing is
muted.

It's driving me crazy! Videos are no fun without the sound!

Sorry about the duplication of Brian's post. I goofed up trying to figure
out how to do this for the first time. DUH.
