help: new XP, can't ping

G

gbe

I have a small LAN (2 PCs and a hub). One PC is running OS/2 Warp, the
other was NT4. After a HDD failure on the NT4, I upgraded to XP (SP2).
Now, when I try to ping in either direction, I just get a timeout.

Both PCs can ping themselves. On the XP, the 'network connections' LAN
object shows "connected"; and, when I try to ping it, the 'status'
window shows bytes being received.

IP addresses are manual. Subnet masks are the same. The ICF says it's
off. (However, when I set it to 'off', I didn't get the warning dialog
that I expected.) In the LAN object properties, all four 'items'
(client for MS networks, file and print sharing, QOS sceduler, and
TCP/IP) are on.

Any clues or pointers as to how to proceed would be appreciated.

TIA,
George

George,

When you ping each computer from the other, does the ip address shown agree with
reality? If so, and there's no name resolution problem, AND assuming no
physical connectivity issues, I'd bet there's a misconfigured or overlooked
firewall.

Yes.

I'd bet there's a misconfigured or overlooked firewall.

I get the same results when I disable (AFAICT) the (M/S) firewall.
Whether disabled or not, I have it set to "disabled" for the LAN.
Would the firewall be affecting both inbound and outbound traffic? I
can't ping in either direction.

If it wasn't the firewall, are there other possibilities? This seems
like just an infinite time sink.

George,

This could indeed be an infinite time sink. You have an XP system, and an OS/2
Warp system. I don't know a lot about Warp, so I don't know what differences
there could be between NT4 and XP that would affect connectivity.

Is either computer connected to anything else, so you can verify connectivity
with something? Any chance you could borrow a third computer, just to test
connectivity?

Is Windows Firewall the only firewall product on the XP computer? What
antivirus do you have?

When you installed XP, did you get XP compatible drivers for the network card?
Have you made sure that you have the latest versions of the drivers?
