Help needed with networking Samsung laser (long winded)

Hi

I've run out of USB ports & as my new Samsung ML-2251N has an Ethernet port,
I thought that I'd effectively network it.

The intention was to run it off a spare port on my Speedtouch 510 router,
rather than enabling a 2nd Ethernet port on my PC. The idea being that when
I add another computer - it will easily be able to access the Samsung
without the existing PC being powered up. I'm assuming this is feasible.

The printer has been working fine over USB. I've installed what Samsung call
Sync Thru, SetIP then their version of IPP. The instructions are as clear as
mud to someone unfamiliar with networking such as myself. My 1st step was to
run SetIP which could see the printer was there. I then tried to add the
printer, selecting parameters such as on a network but soon came up with
unfamiliar requests such as path print name etc so gave up for the night.
Googling gave me 100s of pages from different American colleges with
instructions on accessing a workgroup printer from a dorm, where I want to
create a network to connect to, so gave up that route.

I got a lot further this morning when I again ran the SetIP utility that
errored when trying to save the default IP address & submask. I guessed at
an
alternative mask of 255.255.255.0 instead of zeros & bingo - out popped a
Network Printer Card Test Page that showed the pri & sec DNS to both be zero
which I'm guessing to be correct. When I tried to add a printer from within
Sync Thru, I got a bit further (it's merely a shortcut to WindowsXP Add
printer Wizard).

This time I chose local printer then added a new port which I named Printer,
using the newly install IPP protocol. Gave it a share name but nothing
happened when invited to print a test page although the wizard successfully
added the printer. Sync Thru cannot find the printer. My router has DHCP
disabled & obviously a static IP address assigned to my PC. When I ran XP's
printer Wizard, Kerio, my software Firewall, popped up a warning, so the
printer was added to allow LAN access. I can't share printers at the moment,
so I'll need to check through XP's services I've previously disabled but
assume this ain't the main problem.

Anyone with knowledge of adding a printer with XP Pro to a router able to
help?

Well that was one hell of a caper to get working! Scrapped the default IP &
set the gateway to my router's address meant I could finally ping the
printer. Still couldn't print until I gave up on using IPP for the port &
used the std Samsung printer port protocol instead - now works fine as does
sync Thru & the browser interface.
