help needed with input problems

Hi, all. I hope someone can help me.

I have an older computer (MSI-6198, 256Mb RAM, standard mouse & keyboard)
upon which I wished to install WinXP.

First, I updated the BIOS and then installed WinXP Home. I then installed
the SP2 upgrade overnight and all other MS OS patches. The installation
seemed to go flawlessly.

This morning as I was in the middle of reviewing the results, the mouse and
keyboard locked up; the computer was working but I couldn't input anything.
I did a hard restart and, once at the Welcome/Login screen, I noticed the
same problem. I then pulled the power plug and unplugged and replugged the
mouse and keyboard. Upon power up, I noticed the keyboard was still not
working but the mouse was. I clicked on my account button to login but, upon
clicking, the mouse stopped working...I can't tell if the computer is
frozen.

This is my daughter's computer and I have noticed her in the past fiddling
with the keyboard plug but she never mentioned a problem to me. It turns
out, under Win98, the keyboard would very occasionally stop working. The
solution was to shut down, unplug and replug the keyboard, and start up
again. It was very occasional and couldn't be reproduced.

Now I am hard down.

Any ideas?

Check for spyware/scum-ware problems with SpyBot S&D and
Ad-Aware SE Personal. Make sure the hard drive is checked
for errors and defragged. Make sure that you don't have an
over-heating problem. Try it for an hour or two in safe
mode (good time to defrag). Make sure you have a proper
amount of virtual memory.

If all that doesn't find the problem, you might have a mobo
problem since that is the common hardware for the mouse and
kybd. A lot of fiddling with the plugs could cause
damage/looseness, you might open device manager and look at
the kybd and mouse to see if any problems are detected.
