Help needed, Windows decides to shut down the system

Carol

This problem is not related to Windows XP directly, but to Windows 2003.
Unfortunately, I can find no Newsgroup related to Windows 2003.
I hope that one of you can help me out with my problem.

Under normal circumstances, my system is running very stable and shows no
problems.

But when I start my Dial-Up connection and Outlook Express, after a short
time a message appears as follows:

"The system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off.
Any unsaved changes will be lost. The shutdown was initiated by NT
AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

Time before shutdown 00:00:59 (countdown timer)

Message:
Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service
terminated unexpectedly".

This is preventing me from using my dial-up connection and the Internet.

Does anybody knows what is causing a system restart each time and how to
avoid this?

Thanks in advance,

Carol

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:

Many thanks to the people who took the effort to respond to my problem.

Unfortunately, none of these replies did solution the problem.

So, I decided to go back a few steps and see what the possible cause is.

I did an "uninstall" of Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and MSN
Messenger.
I also removed all traces in the Windows Registrery.

Reinstalling these items as follow:

- Internet Explorer: no problem.
- Outlook Express: no problem .
- MSN Messenger (latest version): the problem came back.

Now I went to a previous version of MSN Messenger, and everything seems to
work fine.

But don't ask me why MSN Messenger is causing the problem as I don't have a
clue.

Regards,

Carol
