Help needed - optimizing hard drive memory due to installer files

Got a "hard drive out of memory" message and when I did a bit of exploring
there is a folder in Windows tree called "installer" that has 21.2Gig...it
appears to be patches or packages....can these be removed and how? I'm on
SP@ XP ver 5.1.2600
