Help needed on .exe files

My OS is Win XP pro, SP2.
To make a story short: my son changed an extension on a file he was
downloading when this window came up on the screen saying " which
program do you want to use to open this file ? " He then chose LView
Pro, an image viewing program, and must have checked the " always use
this program to open this kind of file ". Unfortunately this file was a
..exe file of some sort.. or a virus...that's what he told me !!! Since
then, no program would open on the PC ! The .exe extension always
associated with this image viewing program. No Explorer, no NotePad,
absolutely nothing opened without the window : " what program do you
want to use to open this file" ! I didn't reboot the PC since then,
affraid not to be able to get back on ! It took me 2 hours to finally
get to " add a new " extension file to the file type pane. I hadded the
EXE file extention and selected " application " as the file type. So now
everything seems back to normal.But...when choosing a file type I saw
different file types that could have been my choice, like " Windows
shell32 app", etc...
Did I choose the right file type association for this .exe extension ?
Or am I better off with another file type ?
Your help would be grately appreciated by my son who is now confined to
his room untill his majority !!!! He's only 12 !!! Grrrrr !!!
Thanks.
