Help needed, Linksys problems

For a few weeks when using our Linksys router once every week or so
I'll get a dead connection. The only way I can get it to work is by
rebooting the router and sometimes the modem too and then, when I look
in the events thing I'll have a few of these, spaced out over a day

You probably need to replace the Linksys router.

eek, hope not. i think it's under a year old anyways, but I was forced
into using one in the first place (so my son could have his machine
upstairs linked up)

Well, a good way to troubleshoot whether or not the router is causing
problems is to connect a machine directly to the cable/dsl modem. Then
try with the router. You could also take the router to a friend's house
and test it there. Hardware dies sometimes, even when it is new.

i can certainly do the first, but I'm almost housebound so the second
is out. I may have found some help with this on a linksys page,
something to do with setting a particular IP but I think my son will
need to do his at the same time and it's a little late to start
running round the house so it'll have to wait til tomorrow

I was having similar problems with my setup initially. Is your computer
relatively up-to-date with Windows updates? They made some improvements for
wireless networking a while back. Also, have you tried upgrading the firmware
on the router? Some weeks I had the same problem 4-5 times. It's very
frustrating. Since updating the router firmware, I have not had a problem in
about a year. I'd definitely do this before getting rid of the router. You
can get a firmware upgrade from the Linksys web site
(http://www.linksys.com/download/)

IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE CONNECTED WIRELESSLY: Download the firmware to your
computer and make sure you are hardwired (connected via ethernet cable) to
the router before installing the firmware upgrade. I say this because it
seems to break the wireless connection while writing to the memory on the
router. From my own experiences, this seems to cause some quirks in the
router. Good luck.

Cheers. I am not wireless but did go for the firmware. There's just
one small glitch in that once every so often the thing will now shut
off for just a couple of seconds then come back on. I'll get a an
event showing that tcp/ip did it's job but no good reason for the
cutoff. It's quite random and I think it would have been when it would
have failed previous to firmware upgrade, which had got so bad it
could cut off twice in an hour.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure then. Make sure you are all up to date with Windows
updates. Are you losing connection with the router or the internet? Do you
have cable or DSL? If cable, do you have a splitter dividing your connection
between your TV and the router?

It's not the modem, which is cable, the lights go out on the router,
as if it has been rebooted. The incoming line is split, i think.
