Help needed installing a usb-serial cable

A client of mine uses Metrologic Orbit card scanners connected to XP Pro
computers to check in members at 3 health clubs. At two of the health
clubs, everything works well. The member flashes their key/card at the
scanner, the scanner reads the member ID, shoots it into the software
check-in module, the check-in is recorded and closed, and the check-in
clears for the next scan. At the third health club, however, the Metrologic
MX009 USB-to-serial adapter that connects the Orbit to a USB port (no serial
port available) will not install correctly, which causes the scanner to
function in something like keyboard mode, where the card scan transaction
will not happen automatically. The scanner will read the card and input the
member ID into the software check-in field, but the front desk person must
hit "enter" on the keyboard 2-3 times to force the data to input and clear
for the next scan.

The problem *seems* to be related to the fact that the usb-to-serial
converter installs automatically as a "USB Human Interface." So I'm not
given the opportunity to install the MX009 drivers per the directions on the
Metrologic website. And when I try to udate the driver from it's entry in
Device Manager, it says that the current driver is good enough.

On the two computers where the scanner/cable combination is working
properly, the usb-to-serial adapter shows up under the COM ports in Device
Manager. On the third computer, it shows up under USB Human Interface (or
something very close to that).

Have I given enough information for someone to help me start
troubleshooting? This situation is causing a big problem for the club, and
I would like nothing more than to be able to assist them in finding a
solution.

Thank you very much for any assistance one can provide.

Since you're making money off this effort, it's only fair you pay whoever
solves the problem for you, don't you think? Make an offer.

Don't confuse charging for my services with "making money."
