Help! Need to put XP on new computer

Hope someone can help me here. I bought a bad computer
from a local joint (that I'll never buy from again) and
couldnt'get it to work properly no matter what I did. So
I thought maybe we had a bad copy of Windows XP. To test
it I installed the XP on our old computer and it worked
fine which told me it was a hardware problem. So we're
having a new computer built for us. My question is, now
that I've installed XP on the old computer (have yet to
activate it), how do I put it on the new one when we get
it? Should we activate XP on the old computer? (that
would mean we can't use that copy of XP on the new one
right?) If we don't activate on the old computer will we
be able to do a fresh install with same CD on the new
one? Is there anyway to get the 30 day pre-activation
period extended?

Don't activate it then. No one knows how many computers
you have it on till you activate it. You could put on 100
if you want.

Yes, but then you will have 100 computers that will only boot to safe mode
after 30 days.

To the original poster:

Do not activate it on the old machine. Uninstall or format it, then install
WindowsXP on your new machine. There is no way to extend the activation
period.

if you want to install winxp with your newly built puter, don't activate it
in the old puter. however, the catch is, you won't be able to use it 30
days after you have installed it. you can however, install your old
operating system (like windows 98 or 2000) back on it.

just install winxp in your new puter and everything should be fine.

in both cases, it doesn't matter if you use the same disc (even if you
install winxp to a hundred computers). what is more important is the
product key. and that means one product key for every computer.

O.K. that's what I thought but I wanted to be sure.
Thanks to everyone who replied. I should have just
built the new puter myself, would have saved a lot of
grief.

Is this an OEM copy or a retail one? If it's retail, see below.
But if it's an OEM copy, the license agreement ties it
permanently to the first computer it's installed on and you can
not legally do what you want.

Not at the same time. But you can take it off the old one and put
it on the new.

If it's a retail copy, none of this matters. You may install it
on one computer, then take it off and reinstall it on another.
You'll have to reactivate it on the new one. When you do so,
activation over the internet will fail, and you'll begiven an 800
to which you make a voice call. Just explain that you've taken it
off the old computer and they will believe you; they'll give you
a number to enter at the keyboard to accomplish activation. It's
quick and easy--normally under five minutes.
