HELP - my screensaver defaults to black

I hope someone can help me. My screensaver keeps going to black after 15
minutes. It seems like the monitor is shutting down, but when I touch or move
the mouse, the screen re-appears. Any ideas?? Thanks!!

Yes! It sounds like your monitor is set to turn off. Check your Power
Options in the Control Panel.

Since you are a novice, let me point out that this is really *not* a
site, it's a newsgroup. You are participating in this newsgroup by
using the web interface, and that's the slowest, clunkiest, most
error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a
newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See

Oh don't listen to Ken per se. Use whatever you want too. We old farts
just usually like newsreaders better. Some people just don't take change
very well. :)

Wow! Well maybe I'll check that out, but all I know is that this newsgroup
(not site, sorry!) and Bill, really helped me out with my issue. Thanks
again.

As Ken told you, accessing Usenet newsgroups using a newsreader is much
better than using the clunky, error prone, and basically awful web
interface. If you have any intention of using newsgroups on more than just
a casual basis, it's well worth it to use a newsreader.

But the web interface can search back to like 1991. Name one news server
that can search back that far! And there are plenty of news servers that
are more chunky and error prone too. Take the largest like SBC and AT&T
for example. Lots of news servers are nothing but useless. Thank
goodness Microsoft's news servers are still pretty good though. :p

Participating and searching are two very different things. I recommend
a newsreader for participating and Googlegroups for searching.

Also note that the abilityto search back to 1991 (or any date) is not
a function of the newsreader. It depends entirely on how long the news
*server* you use keeps messages.

As with any category of software, you need to choose the one that
works best for you. But note that I spoke about news *readers*, not
news servers. The Microsoft news server works just fine in conjunction
with whatever newsreader you like best.

Of course! I only know of one news server that only goes back one year.
Googlegroups can go back 15 years or more.

Yes newsreaders depend on using news servers, thus my point. And once
all of the good news servers are gone, our newsreaders will become
useless. And one by one, news servers are disappearing off of the
planet. So not too far in the future, we all will be forced to use web
based readers.

That's your prediction, and it may or may not come true. Personally,
my crystal ball is in the shop and I'm not willing to make any
predictions.

But whether or not it comes true is irrelevant to the present
discussion. At least for the time being there are lots of good news
servers around. Msnews.microsoft.com works just fine for these
Microsoft newsgroups. It's what I use and it's what I recommend that
everyone participating here use. In my view, it gives you a much
better experience than Microsoft's web-based interface.

Use Google Groups Advanced Search to search for old posts.

True and well said. But you have to understand that web based is the
wave of the future. It isn't what we want, but what the big corporations
who runs everything wants. So why make the OP change and others as well,
when they are just going to have to switch back once again?

As I said, you may or may not be right. I hope you are wrong, but I
fear that you are right. And even if newsgroups eventually go away,
it's not going to happen any time very soon.

"Make" the OP change? I have no power to make anyone here do anything.
All I can do is recommend. And I'll recommend what I think best. The
effort to learn how to use a newsreader is minuscule. Even if
newsgroups last only another year (which is *highly* unlikely), why
shouldn't people have a better experience for that year?
