Santa is bringing my husband and I a new pc for Christmas this
year...yippeeee!!!

We have data files on our old pc that we want to move to the new pc
when it arrives. Some files are large in size (800Meg). To make it
more difficult we have about 100Gig of data to move. Yeah i know what
you're thinking, what the heck is all that data, LOL.

Here is the info you might need to assist us. The old pc is a P3
733Mhz with Win98 2nd edition with 256Meg of RAM. It has two USB
ports 1 serial port and 1 parallel port. The new pc is a P4 3.0Ghz
with XP Pro and 1Gig of RAM.

We do not have a network and do not want to move any programs only the
data. I have read about using software to do this but didn't quite
understand it. I also read about connecting the 2 computers with a
null modem cable (what the heck) or using the USB ports. I think the
old pc has USB ver 1.0 and the new pc will have USB 2.0, if that
matters any. Both pc have NICs installed.

Anything articles you can refer me to about this I would like to read
or if it's a simple task like connecting a special cable to each pc
post the instructions here. Oh yea one more thing, since its about
100Gig of data speed in transferring is important if that is something
that can affect the methods that might get suggested here.

TIA and have a safe and Happy Holiday season.

You can use XP's File & Settings Transfer Wizard, but people have said
they've had mixed results and it is a lengthy process. And yes, you'll
need special cables. I think the easiest thing to do is to take the old
hard drive out, change the jumper to Slave, and put it in the new
machine (you can do this temporarily, you don't have to get fancy with
bolting it in). XP will see the added drive just like any other drive
and you can copy your data over to the new drive wherever you want just
like you copy any other files.

Since they have NICs, assuming both are 10/100, transfer them over the
network with a hub/switch, or crossover cable

You can move the HDD. If you cannot open the new PC (for warrantee or
other reasons), You can get a USB2 HDD box.
