Please don't rely on subject titles to contain all information.

Programs, particularly ones of any complexity, ususally can't be moved;
they have to be uninstalled and reinstalled in the desired location. The
reason is that there are many, many, many registry references that you have
no hope of modifying correctly.

Data, on the other hand, can be easily moved.

Can you clarify what it is you are trying to do?

If it is to move where installed applications are 'installed to' - you will,
in most cases, need to uninstall and install them afresh in their new
location.

If it is to install a new hard disk drive to replace an old one - you can
use an imaging application (sometimes provided with the new hard disk drive)
to clone your system from one drive to another.

However - without more information - those are just general suggestions
based on what little you have provided thus far.

It's very easy to overlook the subject line, and long subject lines

So I don't completely understand what you are asking.

In general, moving data is easy. Just do it. If you have a problem
doing it, please explain exactly what it is.

In general moving programs is not possible. Because installed programs
have many pointers to them, in the registry and elsewhere, you can
generally not do this (except for a very occasional tiny
self-contained program).

There is software that purports to search out all these references and
change them for you, such as COA.exe. I've tried such programs in the
past and found them to be considerably less than perfect. I don't
recommend trying this; the best thing to do is to uninstall, then
reinstall the programs from their original media.

my old hard internal drive to the new external hard drive. I can/will
uninstall the programs and reinstall them on the new hard drive. I will
transfer other files. Then I want to reformat the old hard drive.

by step help.

The fact that one drive is internal and the other external is
irrelevant. You simply want to copy files from one drive to another.

You can do it by copy and paste or you can do it by drag and drop.
Here's one way, using copy and paste:

1. Open My Computer and go to the old hard drive. Click on the first
folder you want to transfer. Then in turn, hold down the Ctrl key and
click on each other folder you want to transfer. When you are done you
will have selected everything you want to transfer. Now press Ctrl-C
to copy it.

2. In My Computer, navigate to the new drive. If there's nothing on
the drive, click in the empty window. Then press Ctl-V to paste what's
been copied there.
