help missing files

I have files that i stored in my documnents that were created on word and now
they are missing i have tried everything for some reason when you go to bring
up the file it says it is a read only file and i am unable to get into that
file. i have tried everything even a system restore however that is also not
working it will not let me go any father then oct 18 and the files i need to
restore are from Sept. I have done a virus scan and anything else i could
think of but nothing is working.
