Help me understand UPS & Power Options

Hi:

Finally got the a APC Backup XS 900 box after power interruptions mess up my
PC more than once. Now I got it plugged in, I'm trying to figure out how to
get it to work properly.

- Seems the UPS beeps once or twice a day, when power flickers for a moment.
It went into hibernation immediately.

- Hibernation seemed to have worked normally till the UPS was installed, and
now it reboots at times instead, saying "recovering from a serious error". So
these two problems defeats the purpose of UPS since data is lost.

- I went to power options and set it at "take no action" when the alarm
sounds, which stopped the hibernation.

- But I then set the power scheme to hiberrnate in "10 minutes" if on
battery, and it apparently does not do hibernate.

Questions

Do I have to go back to alarm, and put in a program to hibernate it in 10
minutes there?? I just want the UPS to handle power interruptions lasting 10
minutes or more, and give me time to finish what I'm doing.

Do you think the new UPS drivers messed up hibernation??

Did you connect a "monitoring" wire between the USB and your PC? Have you
check with APC Support (www.apcc.com?)

This appears to be just a little mis-configuration.
You don't need the APC software.
Hibernate must be enabled.
No system can go into hibernation with the hard-drives
turned off.

With the cable from APC port to USB port my settings are:
Left row -never- -never- -never- -never-
Right row -never- -never- -never- -after 10 minutes-

Without the cable, when the APC alarm sounds, I just properly
close all open applications and then shut down.

How does the PC know it's using battery power? Unless you have a wire other
than power going from the UPS to the PC, the PC has no way of knowing
whether it's using mains or backup.

Ten minutes is pushing it. A cheap UPS may keep a loaded PC running for that
long, but don't count on more than two-three minutes.

How long your UPS lasts on battery depends on how much hardware is drawing
power, their should be wattage ratings on each device.
Mine is a 1000 not a APC Mine is tripplite and I've got it set on 10
minutes, works just fine for me, never had an issue relating to power being
shut off, however I did install the power alert console from the manufactor,
and it's a smart UPS via the USB bus.

That is normal default behaviour

What "It" went into hibernation?
A UPS does not "hibertate"; it is either "On" or "Off", unless/until the
battery is dead.
Did you plug the UPS in for a full 24 Hours (to charge the battery) before
you connected it to your system?

If you failed to fully charge the battery before connecting your computer to
the UPS, then yes, your computer would see a short power failure or a deep
power sag as having its power cord suddenly unplugged.

A beep from any UPS usually indicates failed input power from the wall
outlet, and switching to battery mode. Upon this indication lasting over 5
seconds are so, and present at the PC, you should be shutting down the PC
yourself.

The PC should not be detecting power switching of the UPS from wall outlet
to battery unless two conditions exist. A communication cable from the UPS
is in place, and UPS monitoring software senses this change through the
cable mentioned. The UPS software should have option to shutdown the PC
completely, which is the safest option when AC power from the wall is flaky
or nonexistent. 10 minute power interruptions, in my opinion, mandate a
shutdown (turn off computer) prior to this time limit.
