Help me too choose AMD or Intel

Dear all,

First of all I did not find any dedicated place to pst that message so I
hope I could get an anser from that forum

I plan to by a new system for home
I am a professional in software developement and I would like a computer on
which I will be able to do programming and Multimedia stuff like picture
edition or video editing.

I know the reputation of intel processor, they are really good and fully
proven wth microsoft platform but of course depending of configuration you
request they are expensive

In an other hand there are supplier like HP which provide their system with
AMD procecessor on which I have no experience at all and would like you to
help me in that.

The only thing I have notice in configutation comparison: AMD price is half
of Intel

But what about performance and compatibility. Especially with the next coming
longhorn ?

Thanks for your help
regards
Serge

I wouldnt worry about compatibility with a future o/s unless your taking a
longterm view - ie 5 years
Nor would I concern myself with a 64bit enabled cpu since there is little
software/hw to take advantage of it

If you wish max performance you need to take into consideration,
cpu/memory/mobo/hw as a whole, not individually

AMD has a wonderful history of compatibility. I have been running both
Intel and AMD machines side by side for many years and have yet to run into
any compatibility problems and the AMD machines always out perform the Intel
machines in both speed and cost.

As a developer, I would recommend having both types of machines to test
your programs on. The only difference I've seen have been in performance
but that can be important. There are also a few areas where each processor
requires different code (such as MMX).
