File recovery can be as simple as checking the Recycle Bin or as difficult
as sending the drive to a specialty company that can pull the files off the
drive. The first solution costs nothing, the second can cost hundreds to
thousands of dollars. In any event, do not do anything that will write to
the drive. This can overwrite the data that could still be there. There
are some software solutions available so Google for them.
Crank the system off with the power button - do not use the software
shutdown. Remove the drive and slave it into another working machine to work
from for data recovery. It is often a good idea to do a byte-for-byte image
of it first in case the recovery process trashes the drive. Then start
recovery work from the other system. There are several free file recovery
programs available, just google it.
