The computer I plan on installing Vista on just crashed (Login Error: The
memory could not be read). Is there a way to make the install disc
self-bootable so that I don't have to wipe my HDD to re-install XP first? I
burnt a disc on Mac OS X using the default burning procedure (no special
software), but now I'm thinking you need to burn it with Nero, etc. to get it
to work properly.

Is there a way to do that on Mac OS X (my computer is the only x86 computer
we have)

No, you cannot make the dvd a live dvd able to run Vista directly off of the
disc like Knoppix, if that is your meaning.
