HELP! machine still running poorly indicating spyware still on machine ...

Simon

Hello,

Hoping you can help me. A week ago while surfing, I picked
up some spyware on my home machine. I have run MS
AntiSpyware and it picked up and deleted some items. I
used to work in the IT industry and am very familiar with
my machine and its speed. The browser especially but the
machine also are still running slowly indicating there is
still spyware on my machine. I will type a website
manually into the address bar in explorer and hit enter.
The browser will take 2-5 minutes to respond and then go
to the site. (I have broadband). This is without any other
apps being open and the system idle process in the task
manager saying the machine is 90-98% idle. I have also
swept my machine with

adware away
spybot search and destroy
spysubtract
spyware doctor
ad-aware by lavasoft

Interestingly some of these programs identified issues the
others did not. The final sweep was with the microsoft
product which again identified issues the others did not.

please let me know what you suggest next.

Thank you

Simon

Restart your computer in safe mode and do a deep scan. On the Scan Page
choose Scan Options > Full System Scan. Do this atleast two times until
detects something. Also, before you restart in safe
mode, disable System Restore, some trojans and spyware programs are likely
to restore themselves with system snap shots:

Right click My Computer > Properties > System Restore, check the "Disable
System Restore" check box and restart in safe mode.

Restart in safe mode instructions:
www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/
windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx

Run antivirus (with current definitions) while you are in safe mode.

Hi Simon,

Let's first assume you've run Windows update, and you have a current up to
date Antivirus product installed??

Boot into Safe Mode (F8) at startup;
Empty your temporary files AND your Temporary Internet Files C:\Documents
and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files folder ;
Run the scan while in safe mode;
If you are running SP2, open IE--->Tools--->Manage Add-ons, and uncheck any
BHO's that you don't recognize.

Ron,

How much of this advice would pertain to WinME? I was (out of town) working
on my daughter's computer, which had accumulated a LOT of spyware since I
last checked it a couple of months ago. It got so bad that I couldn't even
get online to install the Beta MS Anti-spyware. I had to give up (we were
going home) and told her she'd need a "professional" to fix it!
