Help - lost wifi connection after sp2 upgrade

Already called Dlink and they don't know how to fix the problem so here I go
out to the user community where I should have started in the first place.

I've got a HP laptop with a D-link "b" wireless card anda D-link Wireless
router. Also two desktops with ethernet conenctions to the cable modem
through the router. One desktop and laptop upgrade via custom update last
night. Firewall, Virus protection and Autoupdates all turned on for both
computers.

Desktop, no problem - make interent conenction and I just unblock the sites
I really trust.

Laptop, connection is fine but packets only come in, not out. Turning off
firewall on laptop did not help. Connection properties shows" limited
conenction" but repair doesn't do anything.

Out of ideas. Help!

When you tried to repair did you allow explorer.exe to access the internet?
I don't know what your setup is but I have Zone Alarm on my laptop. I had
the same problem as you. I kept getting a message about invalid IP address.
I tried repair and did not allow explorer.exe access and the repair didn't
work. After a half hour of uninstalling/reinstalling, checking settings etc.
I tried the repair and thought WTH and let explorer.exe access the internet
and my connection was fixed like magic. HTH

Some simple steps....

For the time being, take down your firewall and just use the WinXP SP2
firewall. Also turn off WEP or WPA if you're using it. (of course
don't access your on line bank account while encryption is off!)

Make sure the zero wireless configuration service is set to automatic
and is running.

Now start over to configure the whole system again and make sure your
laptop is getting an IP address from the router. You might even try
assigning a static IP address to the router if your ISP allows it.

I tried to run IE just like usual, no luck. Uninstalled SP2 and my wireless
connection is back. Misspoke about packets - only going out, not coming in.
Wifi card basically could not find/attach to router gateway.

Turning off automatic updates until I can find a surefire solution.

Did not have any other firewall software running. WEP was off becasue it
gave me flaky connections. Wifi card does not support WAP.

Yep, the problem is that the laptop never gets an IP from router.
Misspoke - all packets out from laptop, none in.

Uninstalled SP2 and all is well. Not going to be an early adopter this
time.

I didn't mean ieexplorer.exe but explorer.exe (as in windows explorer). Yes
mine also could not access the router. There is more info on other things to
try at

It's DHCP setting on WIFI, if you assign a static IP/GW/DNS address(es) it
will work, but it is a BUG. DHCP on EtherNet connection works fine.

I understand the concet but there are so many options in the advanced
configurations that I don't have a clue how to set a static IP, Gateway, or
DNS on the wireless connection. Could you provide details?

First get all the address from either your router 192.168.x.x
Control Panel-> Network Connections -> Wireless Network Connection ->
Properties -> General Tab -> Alternnate Configuation Tab -> fill in 'User
Configured fields. If DHCP Service is unable to obtain the IP addresses, then
the Alternate values are used.
You can use the values provided from your EtherNet/LAN connection if
available.

Had same problem with DLINK router AFTER i flashed to latest bios 8/2004. I
restored it back to the 2002 version of the bios I had previously and all is
working again. DLINK was no help, said it was Microsofts issue, but as soon
as I went back to an older bios it was working fine with SP2 again.....
