Help, lost JPG or browse support for wallpaper?

Hi all,

I've been using XP for a few years now, and I recently un-installed StyleXP
a theme skin program. Unfortunately, my wallpaper reverted to default -
when I try to browse to select my old wallpaper (which is a JPEG) it
wouldn't let me select it - only the BMP files in the Windows directories
show up. I've somehow lost JPG support in my wallpaper dialog. I did a
google groups search for this problem - and have not found anything exactly
like it yet. Its not putting the files in c:\windows\web\wallpaper -
because I've always had my wallpaper files in a different directory. Its
not the TweakUI "Lock Web Content" check because my laptop is running a jpg
wallpaper from a different directory (not in \windows) and the TweakUI "Lock
Web Content" is unchecked - but the JPGs in the wallpaper dialog shows up
just fine.

What got changed when I uninstalled StyleXP and how do I enable JPG support
back in the wallpaper dialog?

Thanks,
Wm

Thanks for the quick reply Wes,

I tried what you said when I got home, unfortunately, my group policy for
"Allow only bitmapped wallpaper" is set to "Not configured" which from what
I take below means the value data is set to 0 - which would allow JPGs to be
seen in the wallpaper dialog - however that's not the case - I still can't
see any JPGs nor anything from my \windows\web\wallpaper directory. Is
there anywhere else that I should look? I'm stumped. I checked my registry
and I don't have the Active desktop entry at all - I don't use active
desktop at all. Its tab doesn't even show in my display properties.

Thanks,

If you don't have a 'Web' tab in the 'Desktop Items' dialog (Display Properties -> 'Desktop' tab -> 'Customize Desktop' button), then you have the 'NoActiveDesktop' policy enabled.

The Group Policy console does not query the settings here:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies]

If the entries were made manually or by a 3rd-party program, Group Policy will be unaware, so check the registry directly.

I have no Active Desktop key under policies - just comdlg32, Explorer,

Now what can I do?

a different directory (not in \windows) and the TweakUI "Lock Web
Content" is unchecked - but the JPGs in the wallpaper dialog shows up
just fine.

What got changed when I uninstalled StyleXP and how do I enable JPG
support back in the wallpaper dialog?

Thanks,
Wm

Hmm, still no joy,

I have no Active Desktop key under policies - just comdlg32, Explorer,

I ran Kelley's vbs and it did something to the registry - but even after a
reboot, I still get no JPG support in my wallpaper dialog.

Now what can I do?

Thanks,

If you don't have a 'Web' tab in the 'Desktop Items' dialog (Display
Properties -> 'Desktop' tab -> 'Customize Desktop' button), then you have
the 'NoActiveDesktop' policy enabled.

The Group Policy console does not query the settings here:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies]

If the entries were made manually or by a 3rd-party program, Group Policy
will be unaware, so check the registry directly.

Thanks for the quick reply Wes,

I tried what you said when I got home, unfortunately, my group policy for
"Allow only bitmapped wallpaper" is set to "Not configured" which from
what
I take below means the value data is set to 0 - which would allow JPGs to
be
seen in the wallpaper dialog - however that's not the case - I still can't
see any JPGs nor anything from my \windows\web\wallpaper directory. Is
there anywhere else that I should look? I'm stumped. I checked my
registry
and I don't have the Active desktop entry at all - I don't use active
desktop at all. Its tab doesn't even show in my display properties.

Thanks,
Wm

Use Group Policy Editor if XP Pro.

Thanks so much for both your efforts, I'll try it tonight when I get home.

By the way - what is the NTFS size limit for a single partition? I'd like
to get a bigger drive, but I want to use the entire drive as one partition.

Thanks again.

According to this
page:http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prkc_fil_tdrn.asp
The largest partition the current implementation of NTFS can handle is
274,877,841,408 bytes (256 terabytes - 64KB). But you have to use
dynamic volumes to create NTFS volumes over 2 terabytes.

Thanks Kelly so much,

Your second reg file did it! By the way - what exactly did it do? What
went wrong in the first place to require your patch?

Thanks again everyone for all your help.
