Help!! Lost Document (Word 2003)

My 75 year old mother somehow lost all of the text on an important document
(word 2003). She saved the document with all of the text deleted. Is there
any way to retrieve the old version with the text...or is it gone forever?
Please help, these are all of her recent memories...she is getting very
forgetful, and so this document is very important to her.

If she didn't have Word configured to automatically create backups (tools >
options > save) and has now closed the document, then it has gone.
