Help! Linksys and XP

J

J.

I've got a new PC, running XPand I'm having no success in
getting this box on the network.

The router is a Linksys BEFSR41 , 4 port wired router. There's
two other machines on it, on running win98 and another XPbox.

The new machine plays fine on the net, IF you feed the output
of the cable modem directly into the network card on the PC. If you
put the cable modem feed back into the router, the network works fine
for the other 2 machines, but now no go for the new XP box.

I can take another PC, and plug the network feed out of the
router that did NOT work with the XP box, plug it in, and other PC
works fine. Re-hook up new XP box, and again, no go (it wont load an
IP address).

I'm running out of ideas. All previous machines with this
router have been plug and play, and indeed this new PC works fine...as
long as the router isnt between it and the cable modem.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm running out of ideas.

Thanks!
J.

Try uk.telecom.broadband - someone there might be able to help

I`d guess at looking how the machine gets an IP address - see if you can
find out whether it acquires one by DHCP.

Does it get an IP address from the router already I wonder ? - Perhaps
there`s something else blocking a connection such as a firewall...

Can you access the routers' config from the XP machine ? (does it have a
config screen, ie. for opening ports etc)

Not very knowledgeable about network problems, still trying to solve my own.
Found practicallynetworked.com to be a good site for help and tutorials.

What is the version of the firmware on the router?
If it is a BEFSR41 ver. 1 or 2 then the latest firmware is 1.46.2
8/30/2004.
If it is a BEFSR41 ver. 3 then the latest firmware is 1.05.00 4/01/04

If you have older firmware, then a firmware upgrade may be all that is
required. Start here:

How many IP addresses have to you told the router to distribute? If you told
it to start at 100 and end at 102, then only 3 PCs will get IP addresses.

If you have no idea, do a hard reset of the router to return it to factory
specs.

It sounds like the computer is not releasing your IP address.

Click run then type winipcfg. Make sure to display the correct ethernet
adapter if you have more then one in the computer. The displayed IP
address should start with 192.xxx.xxx.xxx. If not, release then renew.
