HELP: left click is bringing up context menu

C

Chris

Hi. I started out by trying to fix a problem where the
left mouse button would NOT bring up the context menu. I
searched google groups and found an article with a .reg
file (described below) that supposedly would resolve the
issue and ran it. Now the same issue not only still
persists but now the left click brings up the context
menu instead of selecting/opening items as it should.
This makes it very difficult to navigate. I have since
tried to reinstall the mouse drivers, remove the reg
entries created by the .reg file described earlier and I
have tried restoring to a previous day's restore point.
None of these has had any effect. Additionally I have
checked the mouse settings in the control panel and
the "switch primary and secondary mouse buttons" is NOT
selected. Not sure if this helps or not but when I
restored to a previous day's restore point it seemed to
work when the system came back up. After doing another
reboot it reverted back to the behavior I'm writing you
about now.

Here's the .reg file I was talking about:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVers
ion\policies\Explorer] NoViewContextMenu=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Policies\Explorer] NoViewContextMenu=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Policies\Explorer] NoSetTaskbar=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Policies\Explorer] NoSaveSettings=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder]

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Try checking this registry key....

start > run > regedit

Navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse

Have a look in the right pane .. should be a value key
"SwapMouseButtons" of type reg_sz with data 0

If not right-click "Mouse" in the left pane and create one

Also take a look at your startup programs
eg Start > run > "msconfig" > startup
You may have a program that is playing with your mouse settings at startup.
Try disabling any suspicious programs from starting, when you boot up, and
rebooting to see if that solves the problem.

The left mouse click is not behaving in pretty much all
applications that support context menus but is most
pronounced when on the desktop and in the start menu.

Another thing is that as you continue to use the
computer, opening and closing applications, the mouse
behavior seems to change a bit. I.e. after first starting
up you can't select anything on the desktop but after
using a few apps (aol, notepad, etc) you can. However the
original problem of the right mouse button not displaying
the context menu never gets corrected.

Another thing I noticed that right after pc boots up when
you go to move the mouse it behaves like someone clicked
the left mouse button once and held it down so that when
you move the mouse w/o clicking it starts drawing the
dotted box you would normally use to select a group of
icons. Clicking the left mouse button cancels the box and
immediately displays the context menu. I then go on to
try to click the start button but it won't do it until I
do a ctrl-esc to open the start menu. Then it appears to
recognise the startmenu / taskbar. Of course each item
you click in the start menu brings up the context menu.
Fun huh?

I tried Jon's suggestions in his reply to me from last
night, going so far as to disable every item set to go in
startup but none of that had any effect. The
SwapMouseButtons value was 0 (I think that maps to
the "switch primary and secondary mouse button" checkbox
I reffered to in the control panel.

Hi Chris,

If your mouse is wireless, try a ps2. Either way, start by running the
cleaners mentioned foremost here:

Try this
Control Panel > Mouse > (Buttons Tab) Uncheck "Turn on ClickLock" box if
it's checked
(or Control Panel > Printers & Other Hardware > Mouse ........(depending on
your control panel view))

Then if that helps then instead of unchecking that "Switch Primary and
Secondary Buttons" checkbox , try checking it instead.

Maybe a bit too obvious, but have you tried a different mouse?
