PLEASE NOTE: I originally posted this on the Works
newsgroup a few days ago, but never got a response. I'm
trying it here on the XP newsgroup in hopes of some
feedback (much more activity here!).

Thanks-

Subject: Word processor V...E...R...Y slow to open

I have Works 7.0 on my Toshiba laptop, and I can't
understand why it takes FOREVER for the word processor to
open (typically 30 to 60 seconds). It doesn't matter if I
use the task launcher or open the word processor directly.

The other Works applications (database and spreadsheet)
open flawlessly and rarely take more than a second or two.

I tried doing a reinstall of the Works package, but it
didn't help. (BTW, I'm running Windows XP Home with all
the critical updates and service packs installed.)

What would cause this, and how do I fix it and get it up
to speed? Thanks!

MS Works can be quite an old package....perhaps you should locate the
word-processors' first *.exe file and set it to run in W98 compatibility
mode. Might be worth a try.

....oops just revisited, didn't spot that you wrote v7.0....

He said he has WORKS 7.0 which is 2002/XP version.

WORKS is a pretty big program that loads several modules,
you might look to see what is loading and what files must be
scanned/loaded to open WORKS. There are calendars.
appointments, and other files, maybe you don't need all that
to load just to write a letter.

What Toshiba laptop do you have, CPU and hard drive speed
and virtual memory settings could be less than optimum.

Have you defragged lately?

The word processor will be scanned by your antivirus, because there can be
macros.
The database and spreadsheet will not be scanned because there are no
macros.

I think that WORKS supports macros in all modules.
