help installing WinXP64

Lord Blue

I just got my computer setup, here is the rundown of what I have:
Abit K8V-MAX3
Athlon 64 2800+
1.0 GB PC3200(2x512)
GeForce FX 5900XT
Western Digital PATA 250 GB HDD - 100% NTFS - Non Bootable Partition(from
another computer)
Western Digital SATA 250 GB HDD - 50% FAT32, 50% Nothing

Here's the trouble: I am trying to install WindowsXP 64 on the SATA drive
as it does not have a non bootable partition on it. The only problem with
this is that the CD does not identify the drive at all. How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Install the SATA drivers at the beginning of the installation when it asks
to press "F-something (F6 I think)" to install additional drivers.

I tried that, but it said that all of the drivers I had were corrupted, but
the disk is brand new! I probably just don't have the 64-bit drivers...I'll
look for them

You will definately need a 64-bit driver if your SATA chipset manufacturer
has them. You will not be able to use any 32-bit drivers in XP 64-bit
edition.

Drivers are at http://files.aoaforums.com/index.php?dir=217 or at
http://www.planetAMD64.com

You'll have to register at PlanetAMD64 but they only ask a user name,
password and a valid email address, no personal information. Also
check the Abit site but they likely have none.

Next, you'll want to check out the Windows XP 64-bit newsgroup if you
haven't already.

Look at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/64bit/extended/trial/support
..mspx

OK, I have installed WinXP64 on a FAT32 partition on my PATA hard drive, the
system does not boot to the drive. Upon further inspection, there does not
seem to be an ntldr files present. Any ideas why this is? Also can I
transfer ones from another XP Pro (32-Bit) system, and if so, what string
should I use in the boot.ini file?

Normally if there is another XP system present (not sure about 2k or NT),
WinXP64 will put its ntldr on that system and configure it. A 32-bit
ntldr will not work for 64-bit XP. I found that out when attempting to
add the recovery console to XP Home and ntldr was overwritten with 32-bit
version. I had to grab the 64-bit NTLDR from the I386 dir of the WinXP64
CD.

This is example of boot.ini for XP Home on 2nd partition and XP64 on 3rd
partition (1st partition is FAT32 HP recovery) (note: last 2 lines word
wrapper here):

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

thanks, I'll try that, if that fails I have one more plan, and then I take
it to a specialist.
