Help...I/O Error

Upon bootup this morning, I received an error message
stating..."I/O opperation initiated by registery failed
unrecoverably. Registery could not read in, or write out,
or flush the files that contain the system registery."
My shutdown of the PC last night was uneventful

I tried a system restore but that was not successful.
I'd hate to have to reformat the hard drive...Any
suggestions, anyone???

Download your hd manufactures diagnostics utility disk and
run it, also run chkdsk /f /r.
