HELP! I have had 98 for 5 yrs and now, have XP Home

I use the Outlook Express for my email. The spell checker
is dimmed and unable to be used...I bought this computer
with Windows XP Home Edition already installed...and it
says it is not in the program...this is what I get in the
HELP section of my email

"Outlook Express uses the spelling checker provided with
the following Microsoft Office programs: Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not
have one of these programs installed, the Spelling
command is not available.

In the New Message window, click Spelling on the toolbar,
or on the Tools menu, click Spelling.
Note

To customize the way your spelling checker works, on the
Tools menu, click Options, and then select the Spelling
tab."
Does this mean, I only have Microsoft WORKS and I can NOT
have spellcheck in that program? I spen an extreme amount
of money for this computer and am upset to think I don't
have Microsoft Word (like I did in 98).
Can anyone answer my questions please? Thank you

Word has NEVER been part of Windows. If you had it on your old machine, that
was because the vendor bundled it with the OS. Do a Google search - there
are several free spellcheckers that will work with OE

MS Word has never been a part of the Windows operating system - Win98 or any
other. MS Works also is not a part of Windows. Many computer vendors
include a "bundle" of software with their computers - makes 'em easier to
sell. My uncle's first Dell came with WinME and MS Works Suite
pre-installed; his new Dell came with WinXP Home Edition and MS Works Suite
2002; the Works Suite includes MS Word. He probably thinks that all
computers come with Word. ;<) Did you get the Works Suite? Or just Works?

If you don't have one of the specified programs, you will need to buy one -
or find one of the several third-party programs available that provide a
spell-checker for OE. I'm sorry that I don't know the names of those, but
helpful people post those names here several times a week. I'm sure that
Google could find some, too.

Just to clarify R.C's reply - only the Works Suite will give you a spell
checker *NOT* vanilla Works as the former contains Word. How to tell the
difference? The Works Suite versions go by year (currently 2003) whilst
vanilla Works has a version number (currently 7).
