Help! I can't stop replacing text when I go back and type something

I'm going back to fix some errors in a document I'm typing and it just types over what I'm trying to add to. I've tried turning off "replace text as you type" and it doesn't change anything. Help!
 
Try hitting the "Insert" Key and see if that takes care
of the problem.
