HELP! I can't send or receive email

I can't send or receive email through Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail Beta
I have followed the instructions from my ISP (Sky) in order to receive mail
through Windows Mail but to no avail. My email is provided by Google. I have
also attempted to set up additional email accounts (which I set up in Sky
first) but they don't work either. I get the following error message:
Unable to send or receive messages for pop.sky.com(1) account. The
connection to server failed. Server pop.sky.com Windows Live Mail Error ID
0X800CCC0E
Protocol POP3 Port 995 Secure yes Socket error 10060

Tell me about it; I think I'm going insane!!!!!! It doesn't matter what I
try, I just can't get Windows Mail to work in harmony with my ISP/emails.
Never had this trouble with XP. What is it with Vista?

Thanks for replying Dave. I'm not actually getting my emails from Google, I'm
receiving them through Sky Broadband powered by Google. I can get my emails
if I login to Sky; but I don't want to. I want to use Windows Mail just as I
used to use Outlook Express when I had XP.

The Sky instructions that Dave found use default email ports.
According to your error message, you are using non-default
port 995 with SSL. You should be using port 110 without DSL.

I have same problem. I was forced to switch to embarqmail. I set up the
server info exactly as directed. I keep getting splashed asking me to
login with user name and password. I login, press enter and the splash
returns again asking me to login again and again and again. danny

Thanks Gary, your help is much appreciated. Can I just check how I go about
changing those settings for the email ports. I think I've managed to do it;
but I'm just checking as it still doesn't work. I'm also still getting that
annoying security window asking for username and password even though I've
checked the remember me box! I'm losing patience with it now!

You can change the port numbers by going to Tools,
Accounts, select the account, Properties, Advanced.
For you, the outgoing (SMTP) server should use port 25,
and the incoming (POP3) server should use port 110.
Neither should have the SSL option checked.

If you still get an error message, copy it and post it
here.

Most Hotmail accounts are of the HTTP type, not POP3.
Windows Mail cannot handle HTTP accounts.
You will need to upgrade to Windows Live Mail for that:

Melanie,

I finally worked out the problem. You can download the Gmail pop trouble
shooter and run and it will help you get through the proper setup. the web
address is
http://daggle.com/061120-231332.html

It took a little while, but I followed the directions and it worked.

Hi Gary, below is a copy of one of the error messages I get. I have changed
the email port settings but it hasn't worked. My password is correct; or else
I wouldn't be able to login to Sky email. It's just an annoying pop-up if you
ask me! I think one of the problems is that pop.sky.com(1) is an additional
email account for me as another family member; and not the domain account
which is pop.sky.com.

Unable to send or receive messages for the pop.sky.com (1) account. An
incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages,
you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90
Server Response: -ERR Login failed.
Server: 'pop.sky.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC92
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

The account names such as "pop.sky.com(1)" are cosmetic and have
no bearing on whether the account works.
You mentioned that your family has two different Sky.com accounts.
Is one of those accounts working correctly? If so, what is different
about it?

There is a possibility that the malfunctioning account has been corrupted.
Delete it, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account. Does it
work now?

apparently your password is incorrect.
Note that for password purposes 'a' and 'A' are different letters and can't
be substituted.

Hi Gary, the account that is working is the 'main' or original account that
was set up when we first joined Sky Broadband. The account that isn't working
is an additional user email account that I set up according to Sky's
instructions. I've tried deleting it then starting starting over; but still
the same thing happens!

Have you tried to access this account via webmail?
Perhaps the account wasn't setup correctly?
