My computer freezes at the blue windows XP start-up screen, and it will
not allow me to go any further in safe mode or anything. i am running
xp pro with service pack 2, and i have not installed or changed
anything with my system recently. Any advice? this happened once before
and i had to reinstall windows, and i would rather not do that again,
as i lost a lot of information. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help, but i'd really like to find a way around doing a
clean install. I just can't understand why my computer would freeze up
on the splash screen for no reason. Without being able to log in i
don't know how i can back up files that would be lost.

also, when it is frozen at the screen there is occasional hard drive
activity, but i left it to load all night and nothing changed

Remove/uninstall anything and everthing that you've installed recently.
