HELP I CANNOT RUN ANY EXE FILES ON MY COMPUTER!!!

I totally agree with you. I am patient. However, this approach does not
appear to be working for him or her. Before he or she completely hoses
the machine, and possibly violates the Microsoft EULA by reloading from
a friends disk; perhaps suggesting a local technician would be helpful
if you believe this to be a young person with a casual approach to
troubleshooting.

What upsets me is your comment to me concerning being patient. I simply
recommended to the poster to restate the issue and what he or she wants
to accomplish. There are now 22 posts on this thread and nothing to show
for it. It is better if we all take a step back now and reevaluate the
problem.

There is progress being made, but I have a suggestion for Pegasus.
The directions could be better.

Your directions:
Type this command:
set pathext{Enter}
Paste the response into your reply.

Suggestion:
Type this command and then hit the Enter key:
set pathext

How do you copy and paste from a cmd window?
This is not something that most people would do very often.

There are two ways of capturing and pasting screen output
into a reply. We both know what they are. The one involving
notepad.exe may not work (because it is uncertain if the OP
can launch notepad) whereas I felt that the other was too
involved to explain to a novice. I thought that typing the screen
output manually into the newsreader would be the most effective
method. Perhaps I should have spelt this out too.

I appreciate your constructive comment.

I repeat my previous instructions:
2. Type this command:
set pathext{Enter}
Paste the response into your reply.

"Paste" means that you copy what you see on the screen
into your next reply. Verbatim, please!

While you're in the Command Prompt, you might as well
run some other tests. Type these commands ***verbatim***:

attrib.exe{Enter}
c:\windows\system32\eventvwr.exe{Enter}
notepad {Enter}
path {Enter}

The "attrib" command is supposed to show you some file
attributes. Does it work? If it does not, what do you see?

The "eventvwr" command should launch your event recorder.
Does it work? If it does not, what do you see?

The "notepad" command should launch your notepad. I don't
want an "exe" extension on this one. Does it work? If it does
not, what do you see?

The "path" command should display your current path. Paste
it into your reply.

Just want to add that to easily copy the text from cmd window, right click
then choose "mark" then select the text then press {Enter} then paste that
where you want that

I think my request to be patient was appropriate and there was no
need at all for you to get upset. As far as getting a local technician
involved - this may be appropriate for someone like you working
in a corproate environment but it is proably way over the top for a
youngster who got himself into trouble.

ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is dirt simple. There are two clues: 1) You were jacking around with
paths and 2) Understand how the Windows task loader works.

When you demand of Windows that it execute "something," it searches for the
"something." Windows has no prior knowledge of the location of the
executable code so it hunts for the module you want executed. But where does
it look?

It looks in the directories (folders) specified in the PATH statement and it
searches these folders in the order they are listed. If Windows cannot find
the module you requested after searching all the specified paths, Windows
GIVES UP! Windows does NOT search the entire universe of possible hiding
locations. Windows searches ONLY the locations specified by the two PATH
statements.

(Interestingly, if you have two instances of a module, Windows attempts to
execute the FIRST copy it finds.)

So, then, you've got to straighten out your path statements.

Control Panel/System/Advanced/Enviornment Variables. There (could be) two
PATH statments: one for the logged-on user and one for "System."

They need folders listed so Windows will have something to search. The
actual contents will vary by installation.
