HELP how to change BMP to rich text......???????

Hi all, Please help.....I need a way to either change BMP extensions to rich
text ( or rtf) files or a way to actually have my scanner allow me the
choice to save as BMp....
Now if this is not possible is there a way to change gifs and jpg to rich
text..?
I am at a loss trying to get this all worked out!
HELP!

BMP JPG and GIF are essentially the same thing, pictures. RTF or TXT are
essentially composed of discreet "Characters"

There is no way to convert a scanned picture to text just by changing the
extension.

Some scanner software does provide a software way to "Try" converting a
printed document into a text file but in my experience it's not always too
smart and depends a lot on the quality of the document being copied.
