After a hard disk crash, I re-installed Windows XP Pro. I am not sure how the "Run As
feature became activated on this installation (I never saw it before when I ran under the previous installation), but it has taken over my machine. When I log into my account, I have several programs (Zone Alarm, Norton System Works, etc) that start up. Where before they just were activated automattically, now the "Run As" window pops up for each and every one program and/or process at start up and beyond. Once I have cleared the initial "Run As" pop up windows, if I go to start any other program or process, up pops "Run As". I have looked over the Net trying to find a way to turn this off, but to kow avail. The only Microsoft hel
article does on this subject did not have a solution that was workable.

You can't "turn it off" the system being able to identify file associations is central to doing anything

Here's what you do, when the 'run as' comes up, select the type of file you think the program is trying to run, there should be a check box to make this file association permanent, thus it will not ask you about this file association again unless you go in and change it yourself. Once you have rebuilt your file association lists the 'run as' box should never come up again unless you access it purposefully

Annother ( probably easier, safer and better ) way to do this would be to uninstall these programs then reinstall them, and they should rebuild the correct file associations on thier own.

How did you reinstall? A repair install? Are you using the same login you
used to, with admin rights? Where are the shortcuts that are launching ZA
and Norton? If you're using a different login/profile, it's possible that
this is the problem - can you launch the apps themselves from the programs
menu for all users?

Since you reinstalled xp, most of your programs are messed up. You'll need to re-install your programs again. "Run as" is a system service. You can goto services and first stop the Run as service, then disable it. There is no real need for the run as service in a non-work environment. Hope this helps
