Hi. Need some help here. I have a home network. Setup via a DI-604 router to
a cable modem. 2 PCs using XP Home, 1 using Xp Pro. All Pcs can see each
other. Most files/folders shared can be accessed. On the Xp Pro machine, my
daughters limited user account had docs she wants access to. My machine says
its shared (done by me from an admin acct), but she cannot access from her
laptop. Msg says no permisson. Contact admin. However, she can access other
folders on my pc. All pcs accessing internet fine and each other. Going nuts.
Help.

Please reply to this message in the news group (not by E-mail) with
more information to help other people understand the problem.

What is the exact location (the full path starting with C:) of the
folder that your daughter can't access from her laptop?

What is the complete text of the error message when she tries to
access it?

Is simple file sharing enabled or disabled on your computer?

Has your daughter made her files private on your computer?

With the answers to those questions, I'm sure that someone can help.

Thanks for answering Steve.
The path of the folder that my daughter can't access is C:\Documents and
Settings\sassy\My Documents , The share name is Sara's Documents, and the
path shown in Network Neighborhood is \\SPARKY\Sara's Documents . The
Complete error msg is as follows "\\SPARKY\Sara's Documents is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. Access is denied." Simple file sharing is enabled. No, she
has not made her files private on this computer. Also, the "Allow network
users to change my files" box is selected in the sharing properties window.
Again, Thanks.

You're welcome, Tsani. And thanks for answering those questions.
They've helped me come up with answer that I think will solve the
problem.

When simple file sharing is enabled, it blocks network access to
individual users' folders within Documents and Settings (and to the
Program Files and Windows folders). A bad design by Microsoft, I
think.

You can share subfolders within those folders, e.g. you can share
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express" or "C:\Documents and
Settings\Sassy\Desktop" and access that folder from another computer
on the network.

Since you have Windows XP Professional, you can disable simple file
sharing, which removes those sharing restrictions.

Steve, after i got back last night, I gave it some thought and was thinking
that it had something to do with the fact that the folder resides in
documents and settings. So I created a new folder elsewhere and copied the
folders and files into it. Shared it and problem solved. What confuses me is
that the All Users My Documents folder can be shared and resides in documents
and settings. After reading your reply this morning, I went back and shared
some folders in my daughetrs "My Documents" and tried to access them from her
laptop. No go, same results. I wll try again with SFS unchecked and see what
happens. I know microsoft recommends using SFS and I want to understand what
it does and how it effects my computers security in a workgroup environment
before I fiddle with it. Guess I have some reading to do. Thanks again for
all your help. Hope this helps someone else.

As I noted, "simple file sharing" doesn't allow sharing individual
users' folders in "Documents and Settings". It does allow sharing the
"All Users" folder. In fact, the Network Setup Wizard creates a
"Shared Documents" folder within "All Users" and automatically shares
it.

Microsoft recommends simple file sharing, but Microsoft also built
these sharing limitations into it. I think that's a bad design,
probably done in a misguided effort to prevent people from
accidentally damaging important files over a network.

Go ahead and disable simple file sharing. XP Pro will then validate
networked access requests based on the name and password of the user
who requests access. To allow your daughter to access her documents
folder, create matching accounts for her on both computers: same user
name, and same non-empty password.

Hi Steve or anyone who can HELP.....

I've got the same problems as Tsani. I've searched the net for over 3days
and read almost every possible sollutions and work-arounds to no avail. I
have this connection: Internet --->Modem --->8-Port router/hub --->Compt.1
[XP Pro]

--->Compt.2 [XP Home]

--->Laptop [XP Home]
First off ALL 3 computers CAN see each other over the network and CAN access
each other's "Shared Folder". I have root drive (C) shared on all computers.
Pinging & everything else is successful. Here are the problems: on Compt.1
and Laptop I CAN access Compt.2's (C) drive INCLUDING "Windows", "Documents &
Settings" and "Program Files" folders; but on Compt.1 I CAN'T access Laptop's
(C) drive INCLUDING "Windows", "Documents & Settings" and "Program Files"
folders and vise versa. Also on Compt.2... I CAN'T access either Laptop's or
Compt.1's (C) drive INCLUDING "Windows", "Documents & Settings" and "Program
Files" folders .

TRUST me when I say I've done it all...re and reinstalling the network,
changing the TCP settings, disconnectting ALL firewalls...ect. I don't WANT
to resort to Tsani's sollution and create a new folder to store these
specific folders in as it is too much info that is constantly changing.

One thing to note, they all DON'T have the same users configured yet still I
can see the info on Compt2's (C) drive INCLUDING "Windows", "Documents &
Settings" and "Program Files" folders.

Sorry for the loooonnggg note.

Thanks in advance for ALL anticipated help.
Roberto. (e-mail address removed)

I've been having the same problem. I'm trying to connect my PC and Laptop.
The PC can access files from the Laptop, but anytime I try to access the PC
from the Laptop, it says that it is not available, and that i might not have
permission to use the network resource, and to contact the Sys admin.

I've looked through and seen that disabling the simple file sharing seems to
be the most profered solution, but i have XP Home, and have not been able to
figure out how to do that, if it's even possible.

Any help would be great,

Thanks.
